Abstract
Ferdowsi's Shahnameh and Kushnameh by Iranshah ibn Abi al-Khair are
considered to be among the most prominent epic works of Persian and world
literature, which, in addition to having artistic and epic values, are considered a valid
document of the identity, culture, and social structure of Persian-speaking people in
ancient times. These works provide a context for reflecting the image of women and
the role they played in the mythological, heroic, and historical structure. The purpose
of this research is a comparative study of identifying the identity of women in
Shahnameh and Kushnameh. In this study, an attempt has been made to clarify
various manifestations of women's identity in mythological, heroic, and historical
periods by analyzing the different roles and influences of women in these two works.
Studies show that the role of women in Shahnameh and Kushnameh is not the same;
rather, each of them is present in a different context in terms of culture, society, and
storytelling, and has had its own specific effects on the process of narratives and the
development of stories. This research examines the capabilities and limitations of
female characters and analyzes their impact on the formation of events, their
reflection of social and cultural issues, and the reflection of society's attitude towards
the identity and status of women.
Keywords: Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, Kushnameh, women, identity, epic works.
